Crystal Vargas Update
A little more than one year ago the High School Baseball Web ran a story about an
amazing lady. Her name is Crystal Vargas. For those of you that missed it ....
Crystal was a starting pitcher for the Marist High School Knights, in
Bayonne, New Jersey.
I recently received an email from her high school coach (Gene Klumpp Jr.),
Gene told me how things are going for Crystal, in her first year of college.
I thought you might like an update on Crystal.
From Coach Klumpp
"Just an update on Crystal. She's attending Rutgers University and is a freshman
on the softball team. She is working hard, waiting for her chance to play. She's
excited and did well during the fall practices.
She has an upperclassman in front of her, and a team captain as well."
As a further follow-up to Crystals' high school career the following is her bio
from the Rutgers softball web site:
"Earning all-county honors her senior year, Vargas was the first-ever female on
the varsity baseball team at Marist High School. She also excelled in soccer, as she
received first-team all-county, honorable mention all-state team and team MVP
distinctions as a senior. Just as successful in a third sport at the varsity level,
Vargas ranked among the top 10 bowlers in the conference in 2000 and 2001. Off the
field, she was a member of the NAtional Honor Society and the Student Council
Executive Board, while also graduating sixth in her class. For her efforts, Vargas was
awarded the NCIAA Player-Of-The-Year-Award, presented for academic and athletic
performance."
